Welcome to the Dartmoor Wool Loft

The Dartmoor Wool Loft is a friendly and welcoming community space and shop for anyone who crafts with yarn and fleece or anyone who would like to learn these skills.

We're passionate about the positive impact crafting can have on well-being. We provide a cosy space where you can take a break, unwind, indulge in crafting, and make new friends over a cup of tea or coffee.

Everyone is welcome regardless of age or skill level. Whether you're just starting out and want to learn some new skills, or are a pro in knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, looming, or felting, we can't wait to connect with you.

Our well stocked shop specialises in beautiful and affordable British yarns with a focus on fleece, yarns and handmade items from south west producers and artisans.

We are also keen to support people to mend, recycle and repurpose clothing that would otherwise be thrown away. We stock fleeces and yarns from local producers who practise regenerative agriculture.

Who we are

Nina Bailey

Nina is the founder of the Wool Loft. Nina lives with her family on a nearby farm where she rears sheep and alpacas. Nina also runs Moretonhampstead’s Zero Waste Store, and is passionate about supporting people to reduce the impact they have on the world around them by reusing, repurposing and recycling wherever they can. Nina is a strong believer in the power of community and founded the Wool Loft to create a friendly and welcoming space to bring people together.

Nat Torr

Nat is the manager of the Wool Loft and works Thursdays and Fridays. Nat has always been a craft lover and is fascinated by the therapeutic benefits of crafting and working with our hands - both on our own and with others.

In addition to managing the Wool Loft, Nat holds other jobs teaching Therapeutic Horsemanship with young people at Sirona & teaching TRE (Trauma & Tension Release Exercises; here is her website,) and she is fascinated with the nervous system and what keeps us well and helps us heal.

Her areas of expertise are Crochet and Peg Looming and she has recently learnt to knit.

Natalie Green

Natalie (of @moorandmist,) works at the Wool Loft most Saturdays. She is a local spinner, dyer and knitter and her yarn skeins, carded batts and fibre braids are stocked in the shop. Natalie is on hand if you need knitting help or have any fibre related questions.

Natalie is also really interested in historical textiles, traditional techniques and sustainable and high welfare wool production. Please pop in for a chat about any of these things.

Terri Bate

Terri is a textile artist, knitter, spinner, teacher, designer, painter, illustrator and cartoonist. She was born and still lives in Devon. She has worked on buses and as a midwife, but her passion is knitting, yarn-making, painting, drawing and enthusing about colour and texture.

She retired from her day/night job over nine years ago to follow her dreams. To date this has included: organising knitting retreats, designing knitting patterns, teaching beginners to advanced knitting, teaching spinning to beginners, demonstrating spinning and running watercolour workshops in schools and at local fairs and shows and running knitting and spinning clubs locally.

Terri has a wonderful business turning people’s pets hair into yarn and making keep-sakes for those who have lost their pets. Visit her website here.

Terri can often be found at the Wool Loft for the open craft session on Fridays 11-2. Terri is also our resident knitting ‘Agony Aunt’ on Saturday afternoons and you can book her for a session or one of her workshops here.
